About Dr. Abbey
Jennifer Abbey, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist who has been working in a private practice setting for over 10 years. She has a wealth of experience using cognitive- behavioral therapy (CBT) to address a variety of psychological challenges. In the therapeutic realm, Dr. Abbey provides her clients with expert treatment of anxiety, depression, trichotillomania (hair pulling), and overlapping medical/mental health problems (e.g., chronic pain, migraines, gastrointestinal difficulties). Dr. Abbey also offers specialized parenting sessions in which she applies her CBT expertise to target specific parent-child relationship challenges. Finally, Dr. Abbey also conducts thorough neuropsychological and psycho-educational evaluations which are informed by her clinical background.
Training
Dr. Abbey's interest in the field of psychology began at Dartmouth College where she earned her undergraduate degree. Subsequently, Dr. Abbey received her Master's Degree in Applied Clinical Psychology from Columbia University. During her Master's training, she became intrigued by cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) while interning at a NYC private practice. She also began to develop her background in medical/health psychology during this time, interning in a research lab at NewYork-Presbyterian studying the impact of maternal stress on fetal heart rate. These early interests led her to pursue her doctoral degree at Fordham University, a program which afforded her specific training in both CBT & medical/health psychology.
Dr. Abbey received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Fordham University in 2008. She received advanced training in CBT throughout her doctoral training, culminating in her clinical internship at NewYork-Presbyterian's Cognitive Therapy Clinic. Dr. Abbey’s medical psychology expertise stems from her clinical and research work in a variety of oncology settings, including Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, NewYork-Presbyterian Pediatric Oncology Department, and Calvary Hospital. Dr. Abbey also received advanced training in neuropsychological assessment during clinical externships and internships at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and New York Presbyterian.
